Plesk restaurant

The state rooms of a mansion on Palace Embankment. The Neva outside, Murano glass above the tables.

Grand Room

Water, glass and marble

The Neva gave the restaurant its name: plesk is Russian for the splash of water, and the granite embankment is half a minute away. The room says it quietly. A sea-green Murano glass chandelier, mirrors rippled like water, Calacatta Viola marble on the tables.

The kitchen is St Petersburg's own: smelt in spring, Ladoga pike-perch, sour cabbage shchi, game and Northern berries. What this city has eaten for three centuries, cooked simply and precisely, so the produce speaks louder than the sauce.
